How do I join London Search & Rescue?

Anyone over the age of 18 can apply, but you do need to be reasonably fit to be an operational searcher.  However, the group also needs administrators and fundraisers in support of ‘operational’ members.  If you feel you would prefer to help in those ways, please get in touch.

Because of the nature of our activities, and close working relationship with the Police, all prospective members are required to complete an application form and Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) form.

A yearly membership fee is also payable.

Is there a minimum commitment from me?

You will need to complete a Search Technician Course. This is a four month course that takes place over four weekends and nine evenings.

We appreciate you will be a volunteer, but we do specify a minimum number of attendances on searches.  Attendance at training evenings/days and exercises during the year is also required. This is to ensure that all members are fully trained and well practised in readiness for ‘live searches.'

People’s lives may depend upon our skills.

Do I need any special equipment?

What skills do I need to join London SAR?

No specific skills are needed to join as we provide full training for the role. Enthusiasm, commitment and the ability to work as part of a team are more important.

We recommend that you have a minimum of good boots with ankle support, waterproofs, lightweight trousers (not jeans), hat and gloves.

PPE will be supplied and the team has a uniform which we encourage members to purchase.

What training is available to me?

To become an ‘operational’ member and take part in ‘live searches’ you will need to complete a Search Technician Course. This course will provide you with the training and skills you need to work as a member of a search team (generally four people). Further training is provided in a variety of subjects including First Aid, Team Leadership, Communications & Land Navigation (use of map and compass) and other associated topics. Training evenings take place twice a month, and one Sunday in the month although this may vary.

I work, can I still join?

Of course you can.  Most of our members work, some 9-5, some not.  Your family comes first, then your job and then any time you can offer us is appreciated. Some employers are more flexible than others.
